Alternative Healing IX – Magnet Therapy

The final alternative healing approach I discovered in my quest to heal a tooth infection was magnet therapy, which is actually something that’s been used for healing purposes since 2500BC! I first learned about it from my friend Sandra Cisneros, who I wrote about in an earlier blog post. She told me that her friend’s mother used a small magnet taped to the side of her face directly adjacent to a painful tooth, and the tooth eventually returned to normal. I never did find out how long she had to use the magnet in this way, and, this approach sure does create a problem if one wants to leave the house!

In any event, once I heard about that woman’s success, I did some detailed research into the use of magnets for healing purposes, and in that process came across some really interesting websites. Of all the sites I read through there was one in particular that had the most information available, and it is operated by an organization called the Magnetic Therapy Council. I highly recommend this site as the first step in learning all about magnet therapy. While there really aren’t any specific details about using magnets for dental issues, there is some reference to using them for tooth decay and gum issues as well. There is tons of valuable information on that site so I encourage you to read through all of it.

With the data from that site in hand, my next step was to purchase a neodymium magnet for use in treating my dental issue. If you’ve never heard of neodymium magnets, they are not like the ferrite magnets used to clip things on the refrigerator, they are a member of the Rare Earth magnet family, and are the most powerful permanent magnets in the world. I knew I needed a rather small variety of this type of magnet, and ultimately happened upon this webpage from which I purchased this particular model (one-half inch in diameter and .125 inches high).  The price for one was less than $5.00 without shipping, so ordered two of them.

After the magnets arrived in October 2009, I embarked upon a process of using a single magnet 24 hours a day for however long it took for the infection to be resolved. This included wrapping the magnet in saran wrap, then in sterile gauze, and then wearing it inside my mouth right next to the gum tissue above the tooth during all my waking hours. When it was time to eat or to sleep, I removed it and then taped it to my face. To say I was determined would be an understatement. I was relentless about keeping the magnetic field directly next to the diseased tooth, because from what I learned one needs to keep applying the magnetic field until all symptoms have disappeared.

Unfortunately, in my initial research I failed to fully understand how critical it is to use the correct “pole” of the uni-polar magnet, and for three weeks used the incorrect side of the magnet, namely the + (positive) pole, which, according to magnet therapy theory, actually serves to accelerate micro-organism growth (i.e., infectious bacteria) and tends to inhibit biological healing. So, because of this mistake I was actually emboldening the offending bacteria instead of drawing it out! The net result of this was all the progress I had made in manifesting a healing went out the window as the abscess that had gone into hiding came back with a vengeance. As soon as I recognized the cause of this setback I immediately switched to using the – (negative) pole, which according to the theory is used to fight infection and support biological healing. For more information about the importance of polarity, click on this link; you can also visit this link on the Magnet Therapy Council website. Please note that the information on the latter site is not in complete congruence with the former site. I ultimately came to the conclusion that I should only use the negative pole, but you need to do your own research if you choose to use magnet therapy, and then do what feels right to you.

Once I began using the correct pole I continued applying it for over four months, and the result was a continued improvement in the infection. As such, I really have become a big proponent of magnet therapy. However, because it requires such a huge commitment of time and effort, it’s clearly not for everyone. Let’s face it, how many people are going to be willing to put that much energy into saving a tooth when they can go to the dentist and in one appointment just have it extracted, and in three or four visits have a root canal treatment and a new crown in place? The answer is obvious, not many; but if you really want to save a tooth, then it may be worth the hassle and inconvenience. It all depends on what is really wrong with the tooth, on your level of commitment to natural healing, and on how averse you are to traditional treatments like root canals.

With the application of magnet therapy, it appeared as if this long saga was going to come to a successful conclusion. However, there is another twist to the story that needs to be told, and I will share that in my next post. And no, I’m not teasing, I just feel this post is long enough already!  Bye for now.
